Q. 27 A uniform square plate S (side c) and a uniform rectangular plate R
(sides b, a) have identical areas and masses.

Show that

 (a) IxR/Ixs<1 (b) IyR/Iys>1 (c) IzR/I25>1

Hint: Moment of inertia, I ∝mass.
Step 1: Find IxAIxS.

By given question

Area of square = Area of the rectangular plate

⇒c2=a×b⇒c2=ab

Now by definition

(a)    IxAIxS=b2c2[∵I∝mass∝( area )2]

From the diagram b < c

⇒IxAIxS=(bc)2<1⇒Ixβ<IxS
Step 2: Find IyRIyS
(b)
IyRIyS=a2c2as,a>cIyRIyS=(ac)2>1
Step 3: Find IzR−IzS.
(c) IzR−IzS∝(a2+b2−2c2)=a2+b2−2ab=(a−b)2[∵c2=ab]
⇒(IzR−IzS)>0⇒IzRIzS>1
